Renewables and Nearshore Moorings

Innovative Mooring Solutions for Ocean Renewables & Nearshore Applications

Moorsure has extensive experience in designing and supplying moorings for nearshore applications, from wave energy technology demonstrators to novel challenges. Nearshore moorings are crucial in offshore operations, securing support vessels during cyclones and stabilising navigation aids. These environments demand specialised engineering to ensure safety, efficiency, and long-term reliability. At Moorsure, our tailored designs optimise installation, operation, and maintenance, reducing risks and improving efficiency.

Wave Energy Devices

One of the key elements of mooring wave energy devices is designing a mooring system that does not adversely effect, nor subject itself to high loads, due to the nature of mooring a device that extracts energy from the waves. Moorsure designs and supplys moorings for wave energy devices, with a pragmatic view on design criteria for demonstration projects through to understanding the economies of scale for multiple units.

Refuge and Cyclone Moorings

Moorsure’s foundational experience in the moorings sector comes from the design and supply of refuge/cyclone moorings. Designed to withstand both the strong winds and the associated wave conditions in nearshore locations, these moorings are designed to offer the greatest compliance possible combining both chain and synthetic rope technology.

Floating Wind

Moorsure also has an eye on the floating wind sector. Our services include:

Temporary moorings for the installation campaign or main component repairs

Conventional and Multi-buoy Moorings

Moorsure has significant experience in the design, supply and installation of Conventional Buoy Moorings (CBMs) and Multi-Buoy Moorings (MBMs). The Moorsure family of CBM/MBM designs allows for our specialised engineering team to select a cost-effective solution to your requirements.

Moorsure applies best practise OCIMF guidelines to the design, supply and ongoing maintenance of CBM and MBM systems. The differentiators of the Moorsure CBM/MBM systems are:

– A Tier One quality engineered, supplied and installation mooring system without the requirement and cost for a Tier One installation contractor to install the moorings, and

– As the solutions have already been preliminary engineered, it is only the customisation to the location that needs to be undertaken before manufacturing commences.

The completeness of the CBM system can be tailored to the requirements of the location, with equipment such as:

– Buoy Design (Catamaran or Cylindrical depending on location)

– Manual or Automatic quick release hooks

– Hoses

– Breakaway couplings

– PLEM autonomous shutdown valve technology

– Comprehensive terminal monitoring and management system.

Offspring International expands mooring chain capability

Offspring International expands mooring chain capability

Offspring International (OIL) has extended its range of chain to offer larger offshore grade chain and full project management services for offshore mooring systems. Offshore mooring projects previously handled by OIL’s sister company, Sanmar Chain, will now be managed by Offspring International.

Offspring customers will experience the same high level of service with OIL continuing to work closely with clients to consider the overall project picture, rather than the scope of chain supply in isolation. Offspring achieve this by incorporating the highest project management skills and overseeing manufacturing standards throughout the entire project process, from contract review, through manufacturing to testing, inspection, certification, final dispatch and documentation.

Sales and marketing director for OIL, Mark Brooks, comments “Combining the resources of Offspring International and Sanmar Chain will serve customer’s projects more effectively. OIL has over 25 years of offshore mooring experience and a proven track record; working with Sanmar’s existing team in China will ensure continued success”.

Offshore Chain

Offspring International offers stud link and studless mooring chains up to and including 187mm diameter in all offshore grades: R3, R3S, R4, R4S, and R5. Offspring staff have experience in managing chain projects including Spar platforms, CALM buoys, MODUs, and all mooring configurations for FPSOs, FSOs, FPUs etc.

Sanmar Chain International had a successful track record in supplying chain to offshore projects in the Gulf of Mexico, South America, West Africa, South East Asia, Australia, Europe, Middle East, India and the Mediterranean.

Mooring System Safety

System Safety involves the design of systems which are both safe and fit for purpose. As a discipline, system safety focuses on identifying potential mishaps associated with a system(s) and either eliminating them, or reducing their risk to a level that is acceptable.

Typically this risk reduction is achieved through the elimination of hazards, or the implementation of preventative or mitigative control measures.

Moorsure can offer a range of specialist services, including:

Mooring System Analysis within the System Safety Discipline:

– Safety Program Scoping, Planning and Mooring Integrity Management

Mooring System Safety Analysis:

– Hazard Identification:

– Structured What If Technique (SWIFT)

– Hazard & Operability (HazOp) Studies

– Mooring Integrity Failure Modes, Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA)

– Fault and Event Tree Modelling
